At 54, Christy Chung, the beloved actress and beauty queen known as the “Marilyn Monroe of the East,” continues to defy age with her radiant beauty and boundless energy. As we celebrate Malaysia Day today, with the theme “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka,” I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride, gratitude, and hope. Pride in our nation’s incredible journey, gratitude for the opportunities it has given me, and hope for the bright future that lies ahead.

Today, I write to you not just as Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mike Chan, but as a ‘budak kampung’ – a village boy whose dreams took him around the world, only to bring him back home to the land that shaped him.

As I reflect on these thoughts, my heart swells with pride for our nation, gratitude for the opportunities it has given me, and hope for the bright future that lies ahead.

My journey began in the bustling suburb of Taman Melawati in Kuala Lumpur, where the values of hard work, respect, and community were instilled in me from a young age. These values became the foundation upon which I built my life and career.

They guided me as I ventured beyond our shores, studying and working in some of the world’s most advanced nations.

But it was love that brought me to the beautiful state of Sabah. Forty-four years ago, I was with my beloved wife Michelle Wong, and together we made Kota Kinabalu our home. This city, with its breathtaking landscapes and warm-hearted people, captured my heart and showed me a different facet of our diverse nation.

As I traveled the world, advancing in my career and gaining invaluable experiences, we spent more time abroad than in Malaysia, until the Covid-19 lockdown which made me realize that nothing is more beautiful than my own country.

Kota Kinabalu remained my anchor – a constant reminder of the beauty and potential of our Malaysia. It’s here, in this vibrant city where East meets West, that I’ve found the perfect place to bring my global experiences back home, to give back to the country that has given me so much.

I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with the world’s foremost experts and brilliant minds in Bio-regenerative medicine with state-of-the-art facilities across Europe – particularly in Switzerland, Germany, and Russia. I’ve witnessed groundbreaking advancements in medicine and technology that have the power to transform lives.

Yet, through all these experiences, one truth remained constant – Malaysia was always my home. The vibrant tapestry of our nation – with its diverse cultures, rich traditions, and warm-hearted people – is unparalleled. Our unique blend of Eastern wisdom and Western progress sets us apart on the global stage. It is this special quality that I carried with me wherever I went, and it is what ultimately called me back.

Today, as we commemorate the formation of our beloved Malaysia, I am thrilled to announce that I have returned not just with memories and experiences, but with a vision to give back to the nation that gave me so much.

In Kota Kinabalu, the jewel of Sabah, we have established the European Wellness Premier Center – a state-of-the-art facility that brings together the best of global healthcare innovation with our Malaysian spirit of care and hospitality. This center represents more than just a business venture; it is a testament to Malaysia’s potential to be a world leader in medical tourism and advanced healthcare.

By choosing Sabah for this pioneering project, we are not only recognizing the state’s natural beauty and strategic location but also reaffirming our commitment to balanced development across our nation. We aim to create opportunities for our local talents, boost our economy, and most importantly, enhance the well-being of our people.

This center is my way of saying ‘terima kasih’ to Malaysia. It’s a bridge between the knowledge I’ve gained abroad and the home that has always been in my heart. Through this initiative, we hope to bring healing and hope not just to Malaysians but to people from around the world who will experience the magic of our country.

As we look to the future, I see a Malaysia that is not just a destination for world-class medical care, but a beacon of innovation, compassion, and unity. A Malaysia where the ‘kampung’ spirit of community and care merges seamlessly with cutting-edge science and technology.

On this Malaysia Day, I call upon all of us to reflect on the incredible journey our nation has taken since its formation on September 16, 1963. From a newly formed federation to a respected player on the global stage, we have come so far. Yet, our greatest strengths remain the same – our diversity, our resilience, and our unwavering spirit of togetherness.Let us recommit ourselves to the ideals that have brought us this far.

Let us continue to build bridges across communities, to lift each other up, and to show the world the true meaning of ‘Malaysia Boleh.’ As we celebrate, I encourage everyone to participate in the various activities happening across the nation, from cultural performances to community events, reinforcing our unity and national pride.
